Which Resume Formats Are Better For You?
I honestly never gave resume formats a second thought until I found myself in the situation of trying to make gaps in my employment history seem minimal. Knowing how to find good resume formats is the key.
To take the focus off of these gaps in my employment history, I wanted to design my resume so the focus is on the skills I have and how I have applied them successfully in my career. Lucky for me I discovered the functional format for a resume which keeps the focus on skills instead of timeframes. I am certainly not the only one out there who is frustrated with standard formats for resumes and feels as though these do not work well for them. You seem to have no problem finding positions for which you want to apply but you feel as though your resume is not strong enough to be considered seriously for these positions.
You may even stop yourself from applying for jobs for which you are well qualified because you feel certain that your resume is going to prevent you from getting the job and you would just be wasting your time by applying. The first thing I did when I realized there were many resume formats to choose from was to really think about which of these formats suited me best. I did not simply pick the format I thought was the prettiest but instead focused on which format would be the most appealing to potential employers. I had to do a great deal of investigating to make this decision. The first important step was to figure out just how many formats were there.
Then I took a close look at each format and the benefits it offered. Then I looked for recommended uses for each format. In conclusion I decided to test out a few resume formats before making my final decision. I did not take this process lightly and designed entire resumes with a few different formats. I looked at them as though I were an employer and tried to determine would I hire the person behind this resume. It was not an easy process but it really worked for me. I chose the format that made me the most marketable.
