Is a surgical scrub technican your calling? It’s easy to do. You simply need to be a quick learner and have a drive to want to help others.

As a surgical technician you will be where all the action is. Helping in an operating room is a main priority. You have to be able to keep pace and be capable of using all instruments.

You cannot let anything go awry. All tools need to be kept sterile, and orderly. You will be helping the patient get ready for surgery and be there for them afterwards. Working together with lab techs, nurses and doctors is what the surgical technican’s position entails.

First you will make sure the operating room is ready. Testing the equipment’s functionality and making sure that everything needed is there and sterile is a duty you will have. Therefore you must be educated in all new surgical technology, such as fiber optics and lasers.

You will prepare the patient for surgery by washing and disinfecting the area for surgery. Part of your tasks include transferring the patient from the room to surgery. You still have more to do. There are other tasks you have to fulfill. As your title stipulates, you must assist the surgical team in scrubbing in.

Your surgical assistant position is crucial. Completing a good program of study is key. You need to find a program at one of the accredited surgical tech schools that is right for you. Do your research and find a good school in your area. Enrollment should come after you’ve settled on if you want to obtain a diploma or a degree.

The difference is in the time it takes to complete. Both give you the opportunity to become certified in your field. Knowing what you are looking for in a career and an income and knowing how long you want to dedicate on it are factors to think about. Being promoted one day is more likely if you have a degree.

the amount of time you need to study will be 9 months to 2 years after you start. Attending lectures, practicing in a lab and getting clinical experience will all be part of your studies. You can expect to work hard, but you will gain tremendous amounts of knowledge, which will prepare you for your career.

Becoming a CST or Certified Surgical Technician will come once you pass the national exam after your course. Each 4 years you will need to renew your certification in order to continue practicing as a surgical technologist.

Open heart surgery and neurosurgery are two examples of specialities you could pursue to get ahead. Knowing all the new developments in your career choice will give you a leg-up.
