Knowing what you need to do to work as a surgical technician is essential. You have many different surgical technician training courses to choose from, but look into each one’s list of conditions. However, many of these programs have similar prerequisites and requirements.
Graduating from high school is a general requirement at many of the surgical technologist schools. Having taken math, science and health classes while still in high school gives you an advantage, but it’s not necessary. In some cases though, you will need to have taken biology, math and medical vocabulary classes to be accepted into the school. In most cases you also have to be 18 or over.
A surgical technology training school will ensure that you master skills in math, microbiology, English, medical terms, surgery procedures, ethics, physics, psychology, physiology, pharmacology and anatomy as part of your training. Furthermore, you need to be healthy enough to pass a physical exam and drug test, become certified in CPR, go through a background check and become immunized. These things are usually required for anyone wanting to work in a health related field.
During the course of your surgical technician training, you will learn how to do all sorts of tasks in that you will need to be competent in so that you can assist the physician before, during, and after surgery. You will need to learn how to properly sterilize equipment, how to prep patients for surgery, how to assist the physician by handing them instruments as they are requested, and how to clean and set up the operating room.
Doing a clinical rotation to gain hands-on experience is an important part of your surgical technician training to give you a feel for the job and make sure you can handle it. It is best to choose a program that can give you this sort of experience if this is at all possible since it is very valuable and will also give you a chance to make sure that this is the right career for you. This training will help you realize if the operating room is a comfortable place for you to work.
